[GCARC] I did not email you asking for Apple gift card numbers!

Just got a phone call from one of the club members who had received an email from "Jonathan Pearce, President" asking him for a favor, and when he responded he was asked to buy some Apple gift cards, scratch off the numbers and email them to "me".

Uhhh - no. I've seen that scam before. The scammers scrape an organization's website, find the president's name and then send emails from that name to anyone else who's email address they can find, thinking that they'll find some suckers who will do what the "president" requested. If you've received one of these emails it may be entertaining to see how long you can string them along (I think I got one scammer for a couple of days once) but - hey - I'm NOT going to ask you to send me gift card numbers!

I don't know how widely the email list was distributed so unfortunately I have to send this to the entire club. (I previously thought it was just Board members and alerted them but the guy who called me wasn't a Board member.) If you've been contacted with the scammer email please let me know so we understand how widely our email list has been compromised.

Fortunately the scammer was asking for Apple gift cards. If "I" had been asking for gift cards to Marino's Pizza I'm sure it would have quite credible to many Saturday clubhouse attendees...
