No Martians, this time. But members of the DVRA, the Delaware Valley Radio Association, will gather at Grovers Mill, New Jersey, to set up a special event radio station, Sunday, October 29, noon to 5 p.m.
A special event station is a temporary amateur radio station set up to publicize or commemorate an event. In this case, the 85th anniversary of the iconic 1938 Halloween radio drama, War of the Worlds, created by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre on the Air. The station, identifying with the call letters WØW, will be set up at the spot known locally as Grovers Mill, where Welles’ fictional Martian invaders landed, in Van Nest Park in West Windsor Township.
Visitors are welcome and ham radio operators are encouraged to contact the station via “HF,” or shortwave bands. Operating frequencies will vary according to atmospheric conditions.
Special event stations pop up nearly every day, to honor all kinds of events: holidays, battles, anniversaries, lighthouse lightings, fund raisers and many more. Amateur radio operators from around the world communicate with the stations, often in exchange for a specially-prepared postcard to confirm the contact.
