As a follow-up to this question, I would like to add a comment or two.
First, I get asked this question all the time by hams who want to put up
their first HF antennas, and while everyone's situation and desires are
different, there are some basics of HF operation which tend to skew the
advice that I would give such hams in a particular direction. Last night,
we had very successful seminar at the clubhouse that we called, "I got my
license, now what?" in which I covered some of the basics for choosing one
HF antenna over another. But what I did not point out, and I would like to
now, is that a few years ago I wrote a very comprehensive two-part article
for Crosstalk called, "Why Your First HF Antenna Should Be A 40M Inverted
Vee Dipole", which is available on the club web site under The Elmer's
Shack section, sub-section Antennas, Cabling, Connectors. In that article,
I give the reasons why I think a new or new-to-HF ham should put up a 40m
dipole first, and I back it up with cold, hard facts, based on my decades
of building, testing, and using HF antennas. Anyone in this club who is
asking the question of which antenna to put up first, needs to read this
article before buying or building anything, as the facts that I based that
article on have not changed.
There are more choices now than ever before, for a first HF antenna, but
not all of them are good for a FIRST HF antenna. There are 10 different
bands that a ham can operate from 160 to 10 meters, and if you have little
to no HF experience, you may assume that an antenna which covers as many of
them as possible is a good choice for you, but actually nothing could be
further from the truth, and if you read the article that I referenced
above, you will find out why that is. So before making your choice, read
the article. Then if you still have questions, shoot me an e-mail and I
will be happy to answer them. de K3TS
