Those on HF might have noticed daytime HF went dead earlier this week for
about a half hour.
Reason: X-class solar flare.
Was reading about it at
https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=21&month=06&year=2023 , and
they also had there an article about a new way to detect solar flares in
real time. Turns out a Ham radio operator was able to detect a doppler
shift of up to 5 Hz happening on Canada's CHU time beacon HF station during
the event. With atomic clock stability at CHU, I was not aware that was a
thing. But as the ionosphere changes, apparently it can mess with the
frequency of signals this way too!
Thought this might be of general interest.
For the experimenters out there, want to give it a try?
