Randy,
Congrats on the upgrade. Tony did a great job in his note so I’ll keep mine short but your timing couldn’t be better. It’s amazing the difference. Few months has made to the higher (20 through 10 meters) bands. Your general ticket really expands your hf privledges where the DX is. I’ve also noticed a lot of the DXpeditions are working near or above the general band splits for CW so you don’t the xtra to work them! Have fun with it!

Randy,
Congrats on getting your General, and welcome to the wonderful world of
HF. Propagation is getting better every day, so your timing is excellent.
And the FT-991A is a great radio that you will really enjoy. I am a big
fan of Hustler antennas. I have a Hustler 5BTV trap vertical that I use
both in my backyard, as well as on top of my camper. I also have a Hustler
HF mobile antenna on my truck. Both of these antennas are inexpensive, and
both work very well. With the amount of noise-generating electronics in a
modern vehicle, mobile operation in motion can be tricky, but find a quiet
location and turn off the engine, and a whole other world awaits you. That
is not to say that mobile in motion is impossible. Yesterday I worked CT9
/ UR9IDT on 10m SSB while driving home from work on I-295. He was so loud
that he sounded like 2m FM! Sometimes, conditions are just right.
I am planning to host a mobile HF radio clinic for Tech Saturday, sometime
this summer, after we get through with Field Day. Stay tuned, and good
luck!
