Alcon,

Thank you for this interesting information; my Father (Tony Reyes, RIP) had worked at Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock (SunShip) Company, Chester, PA, during the sixties. He was one of the mechanical engineers who'd designed the mechanical claw/lifting arm, conducted testing, and supported Glomar Explorer sea trials; he'd mentioned (many years later) CIA/FBI personnel hovering over the shoulders of the engineers, almost to the point of work stoppage. However, the design team continued forward and completed their tasks.
During his TDY and sea trials, my family never heard what he worked on, where he was, and/or where he was going; after the Glomar Explorer revealed its mission role (mid to late 70's?) did we realized what their contribution to national security.

V/R,
Frank KD2ZHA

Funny thing. I actually saw the Glomar Explorer. My wife and I were visiting Fort Delaware the day Sun Shipbuilding, the Navy, and CIA sent the Glomar Explorer out for its shake down cruise. I was on the North parapet of the fort looking up river. There were about a half dozen other folks up there with my wife and I. Two in suits wearing sunglasses. Here comes this strange vessel down river. As it got close I said to my wife "I wonder what the heck that is?" A voice behind me said "Oh, its just a boat that looks for oil on the seabed." I thought interesting, but nothing more of it for a long time. Until the articles and stories came out about the Glomar Explorer years later.

Thanks for sharing Dick Singer's interesting article. I will add it to my library. I saw the Glomar Explorer, and that day had no camera with me. Though I suppose those other gentelman may have not looked kindly on my photography skills.
