You'll recall the article in the March Crosstalk about "in like a lion",
that was talking not about the local weather, like the snow on the way for
today, but rather spaceweather.
An update: According to https://spaceweather.com/, two events recently
happened.
Departing sunspot AR2964 just produced an M2-class solar flare. The
explosion on March 11th at 2232 UT caused a brief shortwave radio blackout
over the Pacific Ocean. Anyone notice this on air?
Second, a long duration C2-class solar flare near sunspot AR2962 has
produced a full-halo CME that is heading directly for Earth. ETA: late on
March 13th (just ahead of Pi-Day!). According to the article,
moderately-strong G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible after the CME
arrives. During such storms, naked-eye auroras may appear in northern-tier
US states from Maine to Washington. Power grids and satellites are not
expected to experience any effects. But could this still be good enough for
some unusual Ham Radio propagation, such as short Auroral skip?
I've never heard it myself, but would like to! Auroral propagation is
claimed to have a distinctive fluttering to it. There are YouTube videos of
hams communicating with it, so we can know what to expect.
If you'll be on the air Sunday night, and hear anything unusual on HF, VHF,
or UHF, please let us know!
