[GCARC] Mobile radio suggestions

Bob - I live down the road from you. So close, I apologize for my RTTY contesting that might fry your christmas lights. 🙂

I have a yaesu FTM-7250DR that has almost no use on it. I got it as a shack radio, and then found a great deal on a different radio.

If you want to borrow the radio and try it on for size, I'm more than happy to share! It's just collecting dust on a shelf right now. That should tide you over until you know what you like and don't like, and can make a more informed decision.

With almost 200 members in this club you probably will receive a diversity
of opinions.  Here is mine:
I agree with your suspicion that you may get the best long term service and
satisfaction from one of the big Japanese manufacturers, i.e. Kenwood, Yaesu
and ICOM.
Since this is for mobile use, I think you would get the most bang for your
buck from a dual bander that covers both 2M and 440.
Look for 50 watts output on 2 meters and 35 watts on 440.  Then get a dual
band antenna for your car.
The club has a 220 MHz repeater also but you will not find a multiband radio
from one of the big Japanese makers that covers this band.
In addition to regular analog FM, some of radios can do digital voice.  Some
ICOM radios can operate DSTAR and some Yaesu radios can operate C4FM.
But if a low price is important, I would stick with plain FM.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday did it's intended damage on me.  I'm now
thinking about a mobile for the car.  I was looking at the Yaesu FT-8900
which is hard to come by currently.  I was dazzled by the cheap Chinese
radios on Amazon until I read the reviews.  Seems the prudent course is the
more expensive one.  Then I started to wonder if a quad band is the way to
go.  What do you think?  What is an appropriate mobile radio for our area?
I'm not in the position to spend a lot.  Please keep that in mind when
suggesting a radio.
