You definitely want that 3800 mah battery for 8W. I have one for 5 watts! It last forever when you are just listening!

Yeah -- the BF-F8HP is an 8W Baofeng -- it has three output levels -- 1W, 5W, and 8W. It also has a 2100mAh battery standard, with a 3800mAh version available. This is the HT that I have, and it's a pretty good little radio. The 3800mAh battery doubles the size of the unit!
I was able to hit the 147.120 K2DUX repeater from Cooper Road in Berlin for the Bike MS event with no problem with that radio...

Jerry,
There is an 8W baofeng that has an extended battery. About $40 on eBay.

The bigger Diamond antenna is superior to the default antenna. That is likely the best alternative. More power means less battery.

This morning I volunteered for the MSS city to shore bike run and had a
good time but my Baofeng HT apparently doesn't reach the repeater from my
location. I was able to call in on simplex for some reports but was not
part of the normal net. Is there anyone who happens to have a radio they
could spare for me to use tomorrow? I could pick it up sometime today if
you wouldn't mind. Apparently I'd need something bigger than 5W. Thank
you in advance and have a great weekend.
