Tom Perera W1TP Discusses “Spy Radios and CIA Bugs” As Part of The FLARC 2021

The Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club (FLARC) continues its highly acclaimed series of monthly speaker programs with, perhaps, THE expert on clandestine radios in general and the infamous Nazi ENIGMA machine in particular. 

We are pleased to welcome Tom Perera W1TP to FLARC to discuss a topic that has attracted enormous interest regarding contemporary technical matters. This presentation will describe and show the desperate attempts by the resistance to keep informed about the progress of World War II and by spies to communicate critically important intelligence back to the Allies while being ruthlessly hunted by German direction finding teams. The newest CIA clandestine bugs and radios will also be shown and described.

W1TP has been an active Amateur Radio Operator on all bands and all modes since first being licensed in 1953. Tom has created extensive virtual museums of both telegraph keys and Enigma machines. He has specialized in collecting Telegraph instruments and focusing particular attention on Civil War Era and Pre-Civil War Telegraph keys. The virtual Telegraph and Scientific Instrument Museum displays and describes over 3000 instruments. Tom was a consultant to The Imitation Game, the 2014 movie that focused on the work of Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park outside London in cracking the ENIGMA machine code. Tom is a professor emeritus at Montclair State University, with hundreds of publications and lectures in many fields. He resides at his QTH in Hancock, VT.
