Club member Dan KD2TUS tells me he had a great view of comet Neowise this
morning, out at the clubhouse, before sunrise. That's Great! Anyone else
seen the comet yet?
Over the next few nights, we might now be able to see it at sunset too.
Will need to be up high, with clear view down to the horizon because it's
only up a few degrees from the horizon and trees might block your view. To
look for it near twilight end this evening (clouds permitting), look for
the big dipper, then imagine it pouring its contents from the bucket
straight down the the horizon. Bring binoculars. With binoculars you might
be able to see the comet right above the skyglow at the horizon, in
constellation "Lynx". Or maybe not. Won't know if don't try. Sunset is at
20:27 local, but will still be bright until twilight ends 20:59 (~9pm
local).
But that's not all!
If you are still up and want to see a great pass of the space station (no
binoculars required), tonight might be a good night for that too.
Just after 10pm, go outside, and face south-east (towards bright planets
Jupiter and Saturn that you will be able to see in the sky in front of
you). According to the pass predictions at heavens-above.com, at 22:03
(10:03pm) the space station, with sunlight reflecting off of it brightly,
will rise from the south-west (your right). Two minutes later, 22:05, it
will pass nearly overhead, then continue on an arc across the sky towards
your left, until it disappears in the north-east 3 minutes later.
I will have my HT on our 147.180 repeater frequency during the ISS pass at
10pm, if you want to call me. We can watch it together.
Have fun!
