This unit will need need batteries. The Yaesu battery packs are junk and don't last. So I purchased the AA battery pack and got Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA NIMH 2450 mah (not included) that are superior to the Yaesu battery packs. They hold a charge much longer and have a much higher capacity and last longer. Of course, you will need a charger for these batteries. But well worth it and the AA batteries are versatile.
