[GCARC] Phone SCAM

The following was sent to me by the Police Chief of Seaside Park:

 

I know this story is starting to gain media attention again but I just
wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the "One- Ring" phone

scam that is currently targeting cell phones. I personally received three
calls yesterday from a number with an area code where this activity is
originating. 

 

The way this scam works is a computer generated call will connect with the
victim's cell phone and cause the phone to ring once. If the victim calls
the number back they are connected to a paid international adult
entertainment service, chat service or other premium service in another
country and they are billed $19.95. The area codes that have been associated
with this are: 876-Jamaica, 809-Dominican Republic, 473-Grenada, 284-British
Virgin Islands. If you receive a call from a number you don't recognize
voicemail is a good way to filter which calls you should return.
