Subject: Fwd: Sunday Repeater Update

SUNDAY APRIL 13TH:

As an update to the email below, it was observed that the new footprint was seriously less than what we are used to. Some engineering discussions ensued and today the site was revisited – with a new RF jumper. The problem appears to be solved, although there is a difference between the antenna currently in use and the Station Master that is going to be PM’ed.

Also, the repeater’s squelch was tightened up from a “0” to a “2”. This noticeably reduced the white noise that was heard whenever someone stopped transmitting. There’s still a minute element of noise that occurs during the changeover and we’re looking into some way to reduce it even further – without excessively tightening up the receiver.

The other pleasant surprise is that we’re hearing so much digital traffic already on the machine! It looks like more than a few folks have been waiting to try out System Fusion on a repeater.

Keep those cards and letters coming…

TNX AGN,

SATURDAY APRIL 12TH:

The repeater has been replaced and the new DR-1 is on the air! As anyone who has worked with such things can imagine, it took a bit longer than planned – with a few surprises along the way - but the preliminary results show that we now have analog FM and digital communication capabilities in a fairly seamless package.

On behalf of The GCARC Repeater Migration and Precision Bagpipe Dance Squad, I thank you for your patience during the interstitial period and want to encourage EVERYONE to use the repeater as much as possible in the coming days.

As we are currently operating from an ever-so-slightly-different location and alternate antenna, your “before & after” signal reports and observations are important. We are already aware of a somewhat ragged COR and squelch tail combination. Also, the audio level appears to be somewhat lower than what we are used to. These issues are being documented and addressed.

Please submit your detailed observations to me, with a subject header starting with “New Repeater Report – “ and append your specific concern, i.e. “New Repeater Report – Low Audio”. Being able to sort the headers will be of great value when I report issues to Yaesu as part of the Beta Testing.

TNX AGN!

Cory – WA3UVV
