Hello,
I'm Phil Milazzo, KC6OEI of Cumming, Georgia, and the ham responsible =
for radio communications for the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia. If you =
live in north Georgia between Rockmart and Hartwell, BRAG 2002 will soon =
be coming your way with about 2000 people of all ages on bicycles. We =
are an annual family-oriented bicycle tour of rural Georgia. To see what =
we're all about, browse http://www.brag.org
Our course this year is:
Day 0, June 14: we assemble at Rockmart
BRAG 2002 Day 1, Rockmart to Rome=20
BRAG 2002 Day 2, Rome to Dalton
BRAG 2002 Day 3, Dalton to Ellijay
Day 4, June 18: we stay another day in Ellijay and ride these courses =
out and back to Ellijay:
BRAG 2002 Day 4 Century Route, Ellijay=20
BRAG 2002 Day 4 Medium Route, Ellijay=20
BRAG 2002 Day 4 Short Route, Ellijay=20
On Day 5 we resume our travels:
BRAG 2002 Day 5, Ellijay to Hiawassee
BRAG 2002 Day 6, Hiawassee to Toccoa
BRAG 2002 Day 7, Toccoa to Hartwell
I am asking your assistance in spreading the word to clubs in each of =
our overnight towns as listed above. We depend on the local clubs along =
our route to allow us to use their two-meter repeaters and, if possible, =
to turn out some manpower to provide stationary communications from our =
rest stops. The stops are given in the course descriptions above and =
shown on our maps.
We will have a team of hams traveling with us all week. Some will be on =
bicycles carrying radios; some will be driving radio-equipped sag =
vehicles. Those hams will be the ones responsible for moving around on =
our course. Any local volunteer hams will only need to stay put and act =
as communication points. Typical message traffic will relate to =
supplies, separated riders, and requests for mechanical or (we hope =
not!) medical aid.
We understand that hams have jobs during the week, and we always do the =
best we can with the people who can turn out for us. We have about 5 =
rest stops between camp sites each day, and the stops operate for =
several hours each, to handle most of the riders without staying open =
all day. This is the schedule:
Stop 1 7-10 AM
Stop 2 7:30-11:30 AM
Stop 3 8 AM - 1 PM
Stop 4 9 AM - 2 PM
Stop 5 10 AM - 4 PM
The first thing I need is advice on hams in Hiawassee, Toccoa and =
Hartwell. That done, I will send course descriptions to them directly. =
E-mail is preferred. We have our textual course information in Adobe =
Acrobat (PDF) format. Maps in this format are soon to be available.
I anticipate that an overnight town leader will handle our approach to =
his town on one day and our departure from that town the next day. Hams =
from adjacent towns usually hand off the job at the halfway point =
between the towns, but we leave that up to them.
Thanks for your help. Hams have made BRAG the success that it is.
Felton Floyd in NW GA is coordinating his District. I have not yet =
reached the other District EC's in North Georgia, but the Ellijay club =
is already lining up to help us.
