John,
"Next to nothing" may be exactly what you need. Since
your request was for a VHF/UHF antenna design, you
surely have an idea of what other hams are within line
of sight for you to contact. If there are no hams
within line of sight, then you would not be wanting to
make a dipole for those bands!
If, as you say, there is "next to nothing" in your
area, that means that the few local hams who do exist
would be quite hungry to see someone new on VHF or
UHF. They would be very helpful, if you contact them.
I had a friend in North Dakota who complained to me
that there simply was nothing there in terms of hams,
and no two meter repeater. I used QRZ to find hams
not too far from him, found an email address, and
wrote to one of them. It turned out that there were
three hams within two miles of him who were
contemplating putting up a repeater, but had decided
against it because they thought they were the only
three hams in town, and all worked together anyway.
Once they realized there was at least one other local
ham, it spurred them on to finish the repeater. It's
now up, and has a dozen regular users, three of them
confined to nursing homes.
Good luck and 73,
Dave W8NF
