Well what an incredible day for the weather (70° and bright sunshine) and
a great day for a Foxhunt! The event started at 10:00EDT sharp after a
crash session by Jim W2JTS, to give the new and seasoned hunters a
refresher course on technique. One by one the teams departed the staging
area at Thomas Bull Memorial Park to follow their initial bearings. It
would be one hour and twenty minutes before the first hunter, KC2PJH,
showed up making his entrance into the parking lot on two wheels! "You are
the fox!" ; and so his on foot trek began; searching for the hidden ammo
box transmitter hidden under some tall grass behind a fallen tree. It
would not be long until he was ready for his second task of finding the
Microfox hidden in a cedar tree about 50 yards from the first transmitter.
As instructed, he signaled that he found it and now it was on to his next
task of finding the third transmitter.
Not too long after he departed, the next team (Neil AC2O and Dan N2DBD)
pulled in and repeated the process. I am always amazed at how well an
active attenuator works since Neil practically walked straight to the ammo
box. The Microfox task was quick too and once again another team was off
to find the third transmitter.
It would be some time before a third team (K2STN, WB2SZZ & WA2KOT) showed
up and made short work it. Very shortly afterwards, a fourth (KC2YYF,
KC2WXJ, KD2BFP & W2BCC) and fifth team (KD2FLY & K2AWD) showed up
practically at the same time. Its a good thing I had two stop watches.
Both teams were very stealthy when finding a transmitter so as not to
divulge its location, and quickly return as instructed to stop the clock
and move on to the third task. The sixth team (KC2FYY & K2CLL), husband
and wife team hit the ground running. It took a bit of time for the pair
to find the Microfox but ultimately they did allowing them passage to start
their third tasking.
Having all the teams pass through the first location, I headed over to
Jim's (W2JTS) location to keep him company only to find two teams (AC2O &
N2DBD, KC2PJH) found transmitter three. With the time expiration quickly
approaching, and hunters still in the field, we decided to extend the event
by 30 minutes. That was enough time for a third and final team (KD2FLY &
K2AWD) to reach transmitter three. Unfortunately the three other teams did
not make it to the third transmitter, but two of the three teams were very
close. But as they say, "close only counts in horse shoes". But a valiant
effort was made to reach the final transmitter. So at 2:30EDT, the event
was officially closed and an announcement was made as to the location of
transmitter three.
All in all, everyone had a great time and it was most certainly a learning
experience for everyone, including myself. All participants are very much
looking forward to the next event coming up on June 21 and the HVDFA is
looking forward to seeing them again and new faces too. There is plenty of
time to build equipment and prepare for the next event so hop to it!
Here are the initial standings for the 2014 HVDFA season. The lowest Total
Points is awarded first place for the event.
The quickest Microfox find was K2STN in just 5 minutes 37 seconds!
The shortest event mileage driven: AC2O & N2DBD only 45 total miles!
