This is being done on a routine basis in S. California :

These transmitters have 60 second recording capacity, 16 selectable repeat
times from 15 seconds to 1/2 hour, 50 mW output on 2 meters and auxiliary
PTT and AUDIO outputs to drive an external TX, if desired. There's a 2 Watt
amplifier available also.

I tried that with my first hunt last month, using an Alinco 570. It'll
also do
crossband-repeat, and I was feeding it in UHF and conducting the hunt
in VHF. :-) The only problem with that was that I had to talk a lot! I'd
rather
make up a kit that'll do it automagically. :-)
