At the local ARRL convention in San Diego I suggested that
the Boy Scouts initiate a program of DF and Orienteering
into the merit badge program.
I suggested they use the very cheap GMRS type hand helds
($20/pr at Wal-Mart) issue a pair along with a compass,
local map and a rubberband to a sub group of three scouts.
One hides the transmitter and watches, another uses body
shielding to determine the direction to the transmitter that
is on by using the rubber band. The third scout takes a
bearing with the compass. Note that the body shielding has
the "radio scout" facing away from the transmitter so he
needs the "compass scout" to sight down the part in his
hair. They plot the bearing on the map, figure out where to
move to get a cross bearing etc.
No reason why this cannot be done in the classroom. It
teaches maps, compass, magnetism, radio propagation and
properly used, sex.
Jippy.
