You have the classic Fox Hunt problem. The solution is the use of the
mis-named offset attenuator. This device acts as a new first oscillator
for the receiver so it can tune to another frequency and still hear the
fox. Thus all the signal paths that cause overloading when getting close
to the transmitter, i.e., case leakage, poor coax etc, are gone.

I have used this attenuator to make 100W signals inaudible on receivers
feet away.
