Yesterday, 10/16, I drove out to Glenwood, Iowa for a
mobile foxhunt held by Heartland Hams, Inc. It was a
two meter hunt with one fox running about two watts
into a home brew wire j-pole. I got to Glenwood right
at one pm, but still had time to register and chat a
bit before the hunt.
I used an Alinco DJ196T as my receiver, with a steel
tape measure three element yagi and a simple inline
attenuator. A personal equipment evaluation after the
hunt has me thinking I need more attenuation, but the
yagi and the handheld performed perfectly.
As this was my first hunt, the learning curve was
steep, and not knowing my way around town wasn't to my
advantage. Despite that, I came in second twice. I
will say that the time defference between 1st and 2nd
place on the first hunt was fifteen seconds and less
than that on the second hunt.
Prizes were awarded after a hot dog roast that
included home cooked side dishes and cake.
All in all, a great hunt on a great day with a great
group of guys!
