Always one to admit when I am wrong, or misled..I am wrong. The ARDF
decision to use horizontal polarization made long ago in places far away
was the right decision even though it precluded optimum operation of
TDOA type direction finding hardware.
I investigated the difference between a multi element antenna operating
with the elements vertical and with the elements horizontal and located
a few feet off of the ground, a typical location for ARDF hunter
antennas. The ability to measure bearings is grossly different and
significantly better with the elements horizontal.
A typical antenna, 55 inches over a real ground, with the elements
horizontal has a lobe at 20 degrees elevation and 11 dBi gain and a 3 dB
azimuth lobe width of 68 degrees. The same antenna at the same boom
height with the elements vertical has a lobe at 12 degrees elevation
that has 6 dBi gain and an azimuth lobe width of 125 degrees. A
significant difference.
