On Saturday, June 21, 2003 the Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association will
sponsor a hidden transmitter hunt
following the IARU rules. To the best of our belief this will be the first
time this type hunt has been held in Florida.
Five transmitters transmitting for one minute each and running in sequence.
The hunt registration will be at 3:30 PM and the hunt will start at 4:00 PM.
Hunters will start five minutes apart and hunt on foot for the transmitters.
Location, Flagler Beach, about 15 north of Ormond Beach, Florida
No charge for admission, cookout with hot dogs and drinks (free) after the
hunt.
If anyone will be in this area on June 21st, and would like to enter this
hunt, please reply directly to me, John Munsey at
munseyj@mindspring.com and I will forward details and directions.

On Sunday June 15 the Georgia Orienteering CLub will have a 2 meter ARDF
event at Cochran Mill Park just SW of Atlanta, GA. We use IOF standard
maps for some of the best training anywhere. Start is about 9:30AM. Cost
is $8 for non-members.
For directions see our web page at http://www.gaorienteering.org
We will use the "divide and conquer" method of placing controls - first
five people that show up get handed a control to put out in a designated
area of the map. That will teach you to show up early! Seriously, we all
want to compete this year in the big event in OH, so we will share the
course setting duties.
Another training event is scheduled for the weekend of July 12/13, with
80 meter and 2 meter practice.

Thanks for the kind words.
Making changes in hunt style has bee tough here.
Most hunters like a "drive up" or two and then a TX for on foot that is
perhaps a hundred feet or so from the drive up point.
Hope to convert a few to this style of hunting.

Hope you have good luck in getting ARDF started in your area. If you have
any questions there is always someone on this listserver that can help.
I have been active with T-Hunting for over12 years and have done both car
and ARDF hunts.
ARDF has become the form of T-Hunting that I enjoy the most. I have always
enjoyed the outdoors and ARDF lets me enjoy both at the same time.
We have a group of ham's in Albuquerque that is active in both car hunting
and ARDF type hunting.

Hi Bob,
Looks like you are well equipped,
We have two Mobile hunts and one on foot hunt per month in Albuquerque.
Check out our website
http://home.att.net/~wb8wfk/ and look in some of the hunt reports.
Recently we had the "Detour Hunt" (the transmitter was inside a detour
sign). A photo is on the previous hunt report page
http://home.att.net/~wb8wfk/lasthunt.html That was a fun one. Our next on
foot hunt is this Saturday on 80 meters.

My VK3YNG Mk4 sniffer arrived from Australia today and is it ever
neat. I tried it with stereo earphones and I think it will do
really great as a mid course receiver. It has a tone of signal
strength in one ear and ID and transmitter audio in the other. So
you can drive and not be watching the s-meter. I tried it by
setting it on the table with a 5/8 ant and walked around with a
handheld. Even with the antennas touching, it didnt saturate or
bleed through. A great design.

"the heater water valve is still semi functional"
They get a build up of scale inside them. A little bit of radiator flush
fixed several of mine. When they get plugged up you can hear them, rushing
and popping as the water flows or at least ries to, through... The V6s are
also notorious for blowing head gaskets at random, have the dealer check the
VIN number and make sure you got the FREE factory fix!!!!

Hi, I'm Bruce, VK3TJN
Here's a bit of a summary of the Melbourne (Australia) scene.
The Melbourne foxhunters have a night foxhunt on the 3rd Friday of every
month (except when it is moved for Christmas/Easter whatever). The hunt
is in fact a number of hunts (anywhere from 4 to 12)
lasting from 8pm till midnight. Supper & Scores afterwards.
Hunts can be many styles (it is up to the fox), single/multi-legged,
distance/time, band (but always 2m as well) and almost all contain a
significant on-foot component.
There are also a few highlight events over the year, such as the
Australian Foxhunting Championships held last weekend in a town called
Mt Gambier. This now has both mobile and ardf components included over
the 3 day weekend. All bands from 80m to 23cm.
My team uses a motorised rotator system (and a hand beam as backup) with
DSP audio analysis and CRO polar display. Current project is integrating
the DF system with the GPS computer mapping system using the Oziexplorer
API.
The Victorian ARDF group hold an ARDF on-foot event at least once a
month, either stand-alone or in conjuction with an orienteering event.
We have recently been experimenting with fox-or-ing on 2m as well, and
it has proved a much better introduction for orienteers.
Cheers,
Bruce

Greetings from Wisconsin!
I'm new to the list here, I'm Joe Mayenschein WB9SBD been an amateur
since 1975 and loved fox hunting in the late 70's.
I then got married and all that type of stuff stopped, Maybe because it
was the way we did our hunts he he eh.. How things have changed.
I ask you all,, How do you do your hunts?
The way we did ours was,
The fox was a live person, not just a transmitter on a timer system but
a real live ham. they would go out and hide someplace,, we had only
three rules,
1- The Fox must be on public property
2- The Fox must be able to be heard from the designated starting area
3- the first 5 transmissions the signal can not be changed in any way.
That was it,,
#3 was fun later guys were varying power levels even during
transmissions,, or using beams that they turned while transmitting
anything that would mess up a field strength.. it was a blast.
Anyway,, They would transmit one minute every 5 minutes.
who ever found them first got to be the fox the next month, or could
give the fox privilege to anyone they choose to give it to.
anyway they got to be the fox for next month, and they went to a local
pizza place where the rest of the teams had to pick up their tab for all
the free pizza and beer they could or would want to consume!
(I think that part is the part that killed my hunting he he he way too
much beer!) Plus that was in the days that if you went driving home in
that condition and a cop found ya he followed you home to make sure ya
got home safely,, well how times have changed huh? he he he,
soo all How are your hunts done?

We have a large variety of mobile hunts in Southern California.
They range from start anywhere at the starting time and first one
in wins to start here and lowest mileage wins and several
combinations of the two. With easy hunts, you find the same folk
seem to win everytime (there is a lot of skill in this game) so
change it to the third person in wins or something. All serious
hunts for experienced hunters seem to be mileage and with formal
correction factors as they get awful close (0.1 mile in 200).
We also have the FFA (free-for-all) where we meet for breakfast,
leave together at a certain time and hide transmitters and they
all have to be hid in an hour after leaving the breakfast. The
transmitters are left on until 5:00PM He who finds the most plus
hides the most found wins. With 8 hiders, we get around 30
transmitters all within an hour of the "start" place. By dinner at
6:00PM the winner will have found around 12 and placed and picked
up around 4. My problem with this hunt is trying to remember and
find the 10 transmitters I placed.

running about 20% duty cycle each.

Actually KE6HTS, but minor details :). Bob is the person who designed
both the Microtransmitters and the Squawkbox transmitters.
The Scout-O-Rama was held last weekend in Long Beach at one of the local
parks, and we set out 3 of the Squawkbox transmitters and 3 of the
Microtransmitters (all putting out around 50 mW or so into a dipole or
rubber ducky antenna.) The Microtransmitters were set out in standard
ARDF fashion, i.e. one minute on/two minutes off, and they transmitted
in sequence. We went out with the Scouts, and they used our DF gear; a
Ukrainian built unit, the Austrailian units, one person used body
shielding, and another person used the beam antenna and offset
attenuator with their HT. The area was about the size of a football
field with a number of trees and bushes spread around. It started out
rather slow, but once a few scouts tried it, the flow increased and we
were busy the rest of the day.
One thing I did was to use the voice transmitters for training, and the
ARDF transmitters as a "final exam." The ARDF transmitters were about
about 100 yards apart and the object was to find all three transmitters
within 3 minutes. This added a challenge to the event, and everyone had
a good time.
The transmitter hunting portion of the Amateur Radio display was
organized by Joe Moell who did a great job of getting us all together!
The people helping with the training also included Tom Curley, Richard
Thompson, Jay Thompson, and myself.

Subject: [FoxHunt] Fox hunts in Mass !
Message-ID:
Buck was correct, the NoBarc hounds from Greylock Mass have hunts most every
month. May we had a real hunt to find a commercial site on HogBack mounting
that had a pager that was missing a circulator and was causing paging
interference on two repeaters. On was greylock on 146.91- and 146.94- in
Sprigfield Mass! The owner was contacted and the problem resolved.
June's hunt was postponed till July due to all the other activity this
month.
NoBarc also has a Hamfest in August that will likely have a fox hunt as
well!
If anyone is interested in Western Mass Hunting, check out
http://www.nobarc.org/hounds
for the current activity.

Daytona Beach, FL has been hunting for the past twenty years. Currently,
we have about 12 hunters who attend most of the hunts.
We hunt "about" once each month but the date changes due to tourist
activity, race week and "special events" so as to avoid extra heavy traffic
week-ends.
Our hunts are a combination of whatever the fox wants to do. Usually, a
mobile TX or so and a couple to hunt on foot.
Next weekend, June 21st. we will have an all on foot hunt patterned after
the IARU format. We expect about eight hunters.
Check our club web site
dbara.org
for information about our last hunt(s), future hunt dates and contact
addresses for information.
Anyone is welcome to hunt with us anytime they are in the area so if coming
this way bring your gear!

The Georgia Orienteering Club is pleased to sponsor a practice for the
upcoming Region 2 Champs.
The location is Cochran Mill Park just SW of Atlanta, about 15 miles
from Hartsfield Airport. This is an IOF standard orienteering map.
There will be a 2 meter practice July 12th with 5 transmitters.
There will be an 80 meter practice July 13th with 5 transmitters.
The usual international rules, 5 minute sequence with MOE, MOI, MOS,
MOH, MO5. We will probably adjust the minimum spacing rule. There will
be no homing beacon.
This will be a physically difficult practice, not only because it is on
foot, but because Cochran Mill Park is in the flood plain of the
Chattahoochee River and it's been the wettest year in quite a while!
Expect to cross swamps and ford creeks several times. Bring extra shoes
or we won't let you go out to eat with us afterwards...
Start time is approximately 9AM both days. We will go rain or shine.
There will be regular orienteering on July 13th as well.
Directions, etc. are on our web page at:
