I used a quarter to mark my ends and then cut them with surgical shears.
Worke out to a nice rounded end.  Then I dipped them several times in rubber
tool coating (Plasti-Coat I believe it's called) to make it safer.  Works
really well.  I like your idea of using heat shrink tubing.  I'll have to
try that next time.  I also built one of Joe Moell's active attenuators into
a plastic conduit box and incorporated that into the handle.  Real
convenient!  I did use a different pot than he lists.  I got one from
Digi-Key with a switch built into it, and I added an LED so I'd know when it
was turned on!  LOL  One day I'll have to take some pix of this...
