This list has not been in a moderated mode for years now. And I think
mostly it seems to have done well - or at least I have not gotten many
complaints. The list has been set so that if you were a member you
could post. I changed that setting yesterday - so that now I will
need to read and approve any posts to the list. It might stay like
this for a long time or a short time.
Ever since Scott (KA9FOX) and I took over the running of the
QSL.NET/QTH.NET system there are a number of lists that I took over
list admin duties - as the previous 'owners' of these lists had left
or were inactive. The ForSale-Swap list is one of those lists.
Several of the list I took over 'owner' duties for have been closed
down due to inactivity - others like this one have remained.
I have always questioned why this list even needs to exist as there
seem to be many very good and easy ways to sell things on the net -
many with more exposure and more reach than a closed email list. This
list has about 750 subscribers. But I have not killed it because it
has seemed to be active. In most of the time that I have been the
list 'owner' I have not been a subscriber to the list so I have not
been watching the posts - a few weeks ago I did subscribe and I have
been getting the posts - the other day when the off topic traffic
started I was away (not normal) from my email for most of the day and
missed all the fun or I am sure I would have stopped the posts.
There is a list info page - with the list guidelines:
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/forsale-swap
Here is some of the text from that page:
------------------------------------------
What are acceptable items to post for sale?
Ham radio equipment, scanners, computer equipment and parts for repair
or experimenting. This isn't a garage sale so please don't post items
that don't closely relate to the hobby. Just because a ham owns it or
it has a radio in it, doesn't make it ham related. If you are in
doubt, ask the list owner first.
The following will be considered inappropriate postings
SPAM.
Attachments of any kind.
Complaints about anyone.
Virus Warnings or Chain Letters.
Advertising non-Ham related items.
Convention or other announcements.
Ebay or other auction notices and links.
General opinions, debates or licensing issues.
ANYTHING starting with "I know this is off-topic, but..."
Commercial Messages (items offered by or for businesses).
Flames, personal attacks, profanity or other offensive material.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I did not write those but I agree with them.
I am still on the fence about this list and if it needs to exist - and
I may decide that it needs to be shut down but for the moment it will
continue but it will be in bull moderated mode and I will use the
above words as a guide as to what posts to allow through to the list.
Thank you.
