I have available for trade a Kenwood TS950S, which was Kenwood's top of the
line HF rig until they quit making top of the line HF rigs. This is the
model with the built in PS, built in autotuner that loads anything up, and
dual
receive, kind of like a Kenwood TS850 deluxe. Also does 150 watts plus on
output, which is what it is rated for-not turned up past specs by some CB
type, except on 10m where it is only rated for 110 watts but it is doing
that as well.
It has 2 optional filters in it-the YG455CN-1 250hz filter at the 455khz IF,
and the YG455S-1 2.4khz SSB filter at the 455khz IF. The YK88S-1 2.4khz SSB
filter at the 8.83IF is standard, so you have dual 2.4khz filters in it for
SSB.
I ran it this past weekend in the CQWW contest and it performed excellent,
given my crummy antenna. Has that great sounding Kenwood audio on receive
and never had any problems with overloading, no matter how crowded the band
got.
Now it isn't mint physically or anything like it. It does have some cosmetic
problems. The case is in decent condition, no big scratches, dents or
gouges but some marks on it. On the top and sides of the bezel there is
something like
plastic tape or so (black in color) put on it to make it look black. I
removed some of this on the top of the bezel and there is some pitting there
now. Doesn't
look real great there but could be fixed. The TS950SD plate is missing off
of the front, so the previous owner put a homemade label with it on there.
I removed the labels and there is some black coloring (almost like a marker)
covering where the model number plate used to go.
Some of the lettering on the front is rubbing off but you can read
everything ok. The letter problems are just at the top, below that
everything is ok. There are also a few small black marks on the left side
of the front panel, but they aren't real large.
On CW it is working great. In addition to the narrow CW filter it has a
audio peak filter, and the CW VBT which will narrow the passband down even
further. The only real issue I see is on SSB transmit. It does have the DSP
unit attached to it but I unhooked it as it seems that
the DSP unit was affecting the ALC level on CW (not on the other modes).
The DSP doesn't do much on receive anyways, so I don't miss it. The DSP
unit worked fine on SSB transmit and receive.
The dual receive is great for pileups, or if you want to listen to 2
frequencies at the same time-like checking into an HF net and working other
stuff on the band while you are waiting for the net to call you.
Now it is large-really large-radio. Weights about 40 pounds. For those of
you old enough to remember the IBM XT computer, it is about the same shape
and size as the desktop unit for that computer. It just fits into my
station. I like it, but
wouldn't mind something smaller.
Also has hand mic, manual, built in keyer. So why am I looking to trade
it? I could use a rig with 6m on it, or maybe something a little smaller.
Anyone have something to trade? Some rigs I would be interested in trading
for would be an Icom 756, 746, or 736. Maybe a Yaesu FT920 or
FT897D. Kenwood TS690 or TS570 with some filters. Make an offer, never
know what I will trade for. I would also consider selling it for $750 or
so.
Due to the size and weight of this rig I would like to do an in-person deal
in the Oklahoma City, Southwest Oklahoma, or North Texas area.
