Jim:
Yes ... the socket on the back, as you may have surmised now, supplies power for VHF converters.
NOW .. as for the power cord. You could do what I did with my SB 303, which did not have a power cord when I bought it.
I did not want to do any cutting or filing or anything that would modify my receiver, so here's what I did. I had an old mobile
CB radio that I was parting out. The socket on the back of these old things is a three pin socket which uses a three pin power cord ... two of the pins are used for connecting to the 12 volt power source (car battery). The sockets are thin and just so happen to fit right into the hole Heathkit provided for the 115 volt socket they used.
I just removed the socket in the back of the 303 and replaced it with the socket from the old CB mobile radio. It fit right in with no modification or filing of the chassis needed. Even the nut and bolt spacing was exactly the same. I then taped the Heathkit socket inside the cabinet or chassis in case I ever wanted to restore it to original should a power cord turn up that would fit the Heathkit socket, or if I should ever decide to sell the 303 to another Heathkit purist like myself.
Take a three pin CB radio power plug now. Some of them had their two halves held together with a nut and bolt through the center of the plug. Undo the nut and bolt and you'll have the three pins exposed. Get an extension cord and cut off the end and solder it to the two outer pins. If you have a three wire cord then use all three pins. Reassemble the plug. Wire the socket you put in the 303 according to how many wires you soldered in the plug. If you have two wires like I did, then connect the two socket pins. If you want three wires with the center grounded, then run the center pin of the socket to the chassis in the 303.
If you cant get the CB plug open to get to the pins, then just connect the line cord to the wires coming out of the CB plug, solder and tape.
I finally obtained a regular power cord a few years ago, but I use it on another of my Heathkits. Never did reinstall the original Heathkit power socket, but it's still taped inside my 303 should I ever want to restore to original. If I do, no one will ever be able to tell I used a substitute because the origina will go right back just like the substitute did for the original.
