my Hickok tube testers and as I recall, put in a solid  state replacement 
for the 83.  I believe he said it was a plug in, but I  haven't looked and 
since both instruments work like new, I have  never ventured inside.
 
I have no monetary connection with Bill but can attest that he is probably  
the best Hickok guy on the East Coast.
