There were also two prototypes produced. I picked one
up from the estate of an Akron (OH) ham (business
owner) that had been given to him by Art Collins in the
early fifties. Art had sent technical help to Akron to
set it up for the new owner, who was not too technically inclined.
It was not the production KW-1 in the 28" width cabinet,
but was in a 6' standard 19" rack cabinet. St. James grey,
and all control markings were engraved on the panels.
Being a prototype it did not conform exactly to the
KW-1 Manual. The internal construction was a bit
different, but it definitely had the full KW-1 appearance.
I sold it in the late eighties to K8CCV, who later
passed it on to someone else.
Both prototypes were listed in a KW-1 Roster done
in the nineties (don't recall the originator of the
list)
