Very Nice Drake SPR-4 plus Factory Options

My brother bought this receiver new in June of 1975, about two months
before my wife and I got married. For about the next five years, it sat on
his desk in his office, and was his often-used SWL receiver.
Summer, 1980, it was put back into its original box and was placed in my
parents basement storage room, along with most of his personal belongings.
Earlier this year, plans were made to sell our parent’s farm later this
year, and I was asked to start selling off all of his radio gear, and I’m
doing that now.
About six weeks ago, this SPR-4 receiver saw the light of day for the
first time in almost thirty years. And for the past few weeks, it’s been
sitting on my home-office desk and connected to an outside 160 meter loop
antenna.
I don’t know how much good it actually did, or if it might have prevented
any Smoke from leaking out; but I did let it come up to speed on an old
VARIAC for about half an hour.
Listening to it the past few weeks, it really has surprised me as to how
well it works - - - all bands & all modes (AM, CW, SSB). There’s no drift
after a couple minutes warm-up, dial is very accurate, noise blanker
actually works, and it’s impressively sensitive. I’m certain that a thorough
alignment should be in its near future, but for now, it’s a very capable
receiver and seems to work quite well as it should. The only pain in the
butt, or downside I’ve experienced is that every 500 KHz tuning range (23 of
them) has to be re-peaked with the pre-selector when changing bands.

All 23 crystal sockets are filled - by the way. All of the ham bands 10
through 160 (no WARC) are completely covered, and very nearly all other
frequencies from 150 kHz to 30 MHz. 23 Crystals in all.

What’s really neat as well, is that this receiver has the optional factory
5-NB Noise Blanker and the optional SCC-4 Crystal Calibrator.
And. . . . On top of that, it also comes with the very seldom-seen AL-4 DF’
ing long-wave Loop Antenna that plugs directly into the chassis through
the cabinet top. . . and rotates.

So the bottom line here, is that this receiver has seen very, very little
use and looks pretty close to New. No marks, scratches, or dents in/on
the cabinet or faceplate, knobs look new, chassis shows absolutely no signs
of rust or corrosion or pitting, and everything seems to work as it should,
mechanically & electrically.
And as well, the factory original shipping box is included, and also the
factory original Owner’s/Operating/Maintenance Manual. None of the pages
have any markings and there are no dog-eared corners.

I think this receiver represents a very unique find, and I’m pricing it at
$700 - - - that price to include museum-quality double boxing and shipping
and insurance to any of the Lower 48.
If you’re able to pick this receiver up, rather than shipping, I’ll
deduct $60.00 from that. And if it’s of any help with your picking it up, I’
ll offer to drive out to within a couple of hours of Fort Wayne , Indiana,
for delivery of it.
If you might like to have photos or a copy of Specifications, or have
questions; please just ask. Serial Number of this receiver is: 4380.
Thanks for reading all this gibberish. . . . .
