Maybe because it is alot easier to send and receive money by paypal then to go get a MO, mail it, wait for it to get there, wait for the seller to cash it and then finally have your stuff shipped.  Or if you are a seller, you know you are paid instantly.  I have had quite a few deals where "the check was in the mail" so I pulled the ads, told others it was sold, etc, and then the check never arrived.  You can also use credit cards via paypal or get a paypal credit account, which also makes it much easier for transactions with individuals.
