Donald Stoner in his Single Sideband Handbook had a ingenious converter
using just one 3500 khz crystal and a couple tubes. It covered 80 to 10
meters, IIRC. Still have the circuit here somewhere.
I built it some 40 years ago and as I recall it gave decent performance.
But, then again my previous receiver was a S38!
