Hey, if we're going to start selling/swapping BC-221s all of a sudden and
there is lots of interest and .....I'll swap 5 good BC-221s for one good
AN/GRC-9.

Here is a note I sent earlier on dials to the HBR reflector.

----------------------------------------------------------
I still strongly favor the BC-221 type drives for smoothness and the
great antibacklash reduction. If you haven't, you really need to find and
go tune a clean one. The cost is minimal, I've never paid more than $10
for a 221 (well, once I sprung for $15). The only difficult things are
coupling it to a nice 3 section capacitor for an HBR, or whatever you are
using it for, and getting used to reading the frequency coming by through
a small window (ala TCS receivers, GRC-9 receiver, BC-1306 receiver,
etc). I did flip the dial around and used one effectively in a regen
receiver (on my web site). The many items salvagable from the BC-221
include the normal sockets, tubes, chokes, capacitors, and resistors, and
an outstanding audio choke for use on regens. It's one of the best buys
from WWII at swapmeets today.

I'm thinking of adapting one of those solid tuning mechanisms as a VFO
with digital readout for a highly integrated Software Defined Radio.

As pointed out in the HBR "Hints and Kinks" section, there is an
improvement in smooth tuning (and a slightly slower tuning rate) if you
change the "Velvet Vernier" pinch roller vernier drive of an ACN or ICN
dial to a Jackson Bros ball vernier drive. The rest of the ACN/ICN dial
stays the same. It's very easy to do and the improvement will surprise
you.
