List members:
I want to take a moment and offer a public apology for the conduct of
someone I thought was a friend.
The other day I posted a list of equipment that my friend wanted to sell
because he wanted to replace his entire shack. I made a mistake and it
has now caused me to be suspicious of a friend I've had for many years,
as well as inconvenienced many others on these lists ... He says he
has changed his mind and he has accepted a higher, local offer so he
doesnt have to worry about packing, etc. AND, he is also having sellers
remorse about some of the stuff and is going to keep some of it.
He called me last night and backed out of the deals that had been made
and, like you, it upsets me greatly. I indicated that it was me in the
middle and me who would be taking the heat. What I should have done was
give his phone number as the contact point instead of acting as the
middle man. He doesnt have email, and I guess I was trying too hard to
be a friend. I figured that since I have dealt with some of you myself
when I have sold equipment of my own, it would expedite things if I was
the middle man.... especially when it came to payment.
That was my mistake and it wont happen again in the future. In the
future, if I can afford to, I will buy the equipment from someone before
selling it. If I cant afford to, I will simply post the number of the
person and direct contact can be made with the seller. Or, I wont post
for someone else unless it is for a SK widow.
I take you list members seriously and I, like most of you, regard a deal
as a deal. Personally, I have sold equipment and then shortly after
gotten a higher offer ... but I have figured that once a deal is made, a
deal is made ... and if I have lost some money I would have gotten from
a later offer .. honor and honesty requires I go with the first offer
accepted. Besides, it is more important to me that a piece of
equipment find a good home than it is for me to wring every last
available dollar in a deal.
Please accept my heartfelt apology. I have been in this hobby since the
60s and stuff like this shouldnt occur in the fraternity.
