Thanks to all the replies to my post. There were a number of good suggestions 
to try which I forwarded on to my son's friend. Maybe we can get this issue 
figured out for him.

BTW my apologies to anyone who had a message to me bounced by a spam filter. 
The bounces are coming via either qsl.net or my ISP -- I do not have a spam 
filter set up on my system and any filtering up the line is at the provider's 
default levels (which may be a bit too choosy based on what has happened).
