I have bought heavy radios in Europe and found that because my employer was a Fedex shipper, that I was able to use their International Freight (I think they call it FX) service, but it requires the sender to deliver the box to the Fedex freight faciity at a major airport (Heathrow, Masterdam, etc.) where Fedex has FREIGHT facilities (not packakge).
Then it has to be picked up at a comparable freight facility here (I used JFK). I also had to do my own Customs clearing which was easy (except for the wait), once I learned how to do it. Patience is required.
With Fedex you ask for slowest shipment, space available. (it's still air, but may sit in the warehouse a week or more until they have space).
Now all of this may be different for outbound freight, I dunno. But it would create the same burden on the recipient that I had to endure.
First thing in calling Fedex is to make sure you get the right department.
You want International Freight, FX service, airport to airport.
