I have used PayPal for hundreds of transactions over several years as 
both a buyer and seller. I've have never had any problems and in one 
case where the seller did not deliver the items I purchased PayPal got 
my money back in about four days time.

As others have suggested:

- Open a checking account just for PayPal

- Back it up with a Credit Card you use only for online purchases, 
etc.

- I rarely leave more than $20 in the PayPal account itself. As soon 
as someone pays I transfer it to the checking account.
