I have a nicely modified DX-394, after these mods, the 394 is actually a
very nice receiver !
here are the mods I have done in order of importance.
1) crosstalk- the designers at GRE (who designed and built the 394) forgot
some important caps around an IF filter allowing stations to bypass the
filter. by adding the caps this serious problem is gone.
2) a high quality 6/9 KHZ Murata metal case ceramic filter has replaced the
cheap stock wide filter, This filter has the width(6KHz) at 6db to allow
nice fidelity and the width(9KHz) at 60db to cut interference. this is a
killer filter mod, far superior to what other people are doing which is
using the cheap narrow filter to replace the wide one. I do not recommend
that mod at all.
3) the AGC mod, I have set the AGC speed to what I feel is a perfect SWL
speed with the addition of a properly selected capacitor.
4) audio mod, the audio frequency response has been enriched with a
capacitor replacement.
5) Speaker mod--with mods 2 and 4 I researched the audio capabilities of the
394 and found the amplifier to be powerful and the quality was very good
with an external speaker. I determined that the built in speaker was the
worst piece of junk I have ever seen. so I came up with my own mod where I
removed the original speaker, removed some plastic, repositioned the speaker
supports and after finding a nice sounding replacement I used that. Now with
the built in speaker the sound is FAR nicer.
6) chuffing mod, the annoying pop sound when tuning is now gone and boy is
it better that way.
price is $215 including shipping to the lower USA, more elsewhere.
