Just function-tested the IT-21: it works as it should. I removed the
case, handle, and knobs, and cleaned them; lubed the switches, shafts,
and gears, tightened bezel nuts, and re-taped the roll chart to the
drums (boy, THAT was fun!) Note: this is your basic, go/no-go emission
tester, and won't tell you if the tube will amplify, nor whether it will
work in any particular circuit. What do you expect for $35?! I will
include the manual if the previous owner can find it ... shipping is
extra. While I can't see any tarnish/corrosion on the sockets, I had to
wiggle the tube in the nine-pin for it to make up, so have a rat-tail
file and contact cleaner handy. Case is nice, tho not pristine.
Construction quality is good. The plastic lens over the roll chart is
yellowed, warped, and fallen loose, so you may want to remove/replace
it. This will require considerable dis-assembly, tho, and it doesn't
presently foul the chart, tho it makes it a little harder to read. $35
plus shipping.
Basic Electronics, and Applications of Electronics, by Grob and Kiver.
Probably the best trade-school (originally high-school; by current
standards, college-level) books for beginners and intermediates. The
yellow, 588-page Basics book is just that: what the components are, what
they do, what radio waves are, etc. The green, 592-page Applications
book has numerous basic formulas, but it's not an engineering book: it
explains circuits and functions, but won't help you design or modify
them (much). Both are hardbound, with some useful appendices - $5 each,
plus book-rate shipping. BTW, there's a schematic error on page 207 of
the green volume, of both this set and my USAF set: Fig. 7-21 shows a
trace going to the wrong grid on the lower left tube of a balanced
modulator. The description in the text is correct, however - I penciled
this in.
