The first job I had when I turned 16, about 30 years ago (ouch), was working
at the American Radio Relay League in Newington Connecticut...I acted as
Summer tour guide - taking visitors around the building and showing them how
their membership dollars were spent....when there were not tours to conduct
I sorted incoming QSL cards.
The old Soviet Union was structured, ham radio wise, such that you had to be
an SWL before you get an operaitng license....and you had to prove you had
done it by sending out QSL cards which you got responses back from - this
was your collateral towards getting a license. Soviet satellite countries
also had similar programs, like the Bulgarians, etc. - this represented a
significant amount of QSLs!
I am not certain how lively the worldwide SWL community is anymore with the
requirements for licensing worldwide having been lowered so
much...nonetheless the Florida Contest Group was contacted by some SWL's and
encouraged to have an SWL competition category...anything that could further
interest in operating is something we favour - and thus the catagory was
born.
If anyone subscribing to these groups knows an SWL or is an SWL please
spread the word that the Florida QSO Party invites everyone to listen in as
Florida works the world April 27 & 28!
...the web site: http://www.qsl.net/fqp has all the info...
