Today's Topics:
1. Recommended member training resources (Keith Kotch)

Hi Keith,
It seems you are certainly on track with your EMCOMM studies. I have taken =
the 3-level ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Courses and 4 or 5 =
Red Cross courses including First Aid. I am a member of the Broward County =
Chapter of the Red Cross. The Red Cross would like to cross train Amateurs =
in our county. They figure that Hams can do more than just setting around a=
nd waiting for the phone lines to go down. Unfortunately it seems to me the=
y are having a bit of difficulty in convincing most hams and our managers o=
f this need for cross training in our county.

Jerry Boyd, KW7J, was my Level 1 EMCOMM mentor. Jerry is the author of two =
EMCOMM books (both published by Worldradio) and dozens of magazine articles=
on the subject. Jerry has authored =93Management of the Amateur Radio Emer=
gency Communications Function.=94 This 48-page booklet discusses the specif=
ic management responsibilities, which Emergency Coordinators and other EMCO=
MM managers have. It provides very helpful information for such managers on=
how to efficiently and effectively accomplish those tasks.

Order the $8.00 book from the World Radio website:

Management of the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Function

In this book Jerry suggests all of the things you have done thus far Keith.=
He also suggests that EMCOMM managers take the FEMA course ICS (Incident C=
ommand System) The following link should get you started:
http://www.usfa.fema.gov/applications/nfacsd/detail.cfm?id=3D77&name=3DInci=
dent%20Command%20System%20Self%2DStudy&sr=3D1

It just so happens that I ordered the CD yesterday. I was not charged anyth=
ing in the ordering process and of course I have not yet received the CD as=
 of yet.

Also, I would suggest joining MARS. See the Florida ARMY MARS Website at
http://www.flmars.org Check out the participation and training requirement=
s and download the application. Army Mars is a lot of fun as well as good t=
raining in message handling and military net procedures.

Photos of last Weekend=92s Alzheimer Walkathon and JOTA in Fort Lauderdale =
are posted on the web at

Hope to hear you sometime on the Southern Florida ARES net on Saturday morn=
ings at 8:00 am local time on 3.940 MHz LSB
