Ron,

Like your group, we're also responsible for deploying the State's MAC
unit assigned to our region. Right now, that's the only "non-ham radio"
function we're used for even though we keep stressing to our members and
to our served agencies that we are "communications specialists" who
happen to have Amateur Radio as one of our resources.

Your post has prompted me to contact our county radio shop and the FDLE
to offer our services to them as well.

Earlier this year we proved to be a valuable resource to the
Sanford-Orlando Airport during their tri-annual FAA review. But again,
it was utilizing our Amateur Radio skills and equipment.

It did allow us to bring to the table a resource they had not had before
and impressed both the airport fire department and the FAA observer and
the local hospitals.

Is anyone doing anything else, besides waiting for a storm to arrive
before getting active? And once it does, then what do you do? Go to a
shelter ... or deploy a backup 800 MHz system to keep Police and Fire
communications working? Which do you think your county would appreciate

more?
