Members of Sarasota County RACES, ARES, and the Sarasota Emergency Radio
Club, provided communications assistance for the Florida Gulf Beaches
Marathon on January 20th, 2001. The Marathon, which was held in
Pinellas County, is a 26.2 mile qualifying event for the Boston
Marathon. Nearly 1,600 runners participated in the Marathon.

Sarasota County Amateurs were assigned to 3 segments along the southern
portion of the course, stretching from Indian Shores Beach to Seminole
City Hall, and then north on a small portion of the "Pinellas Trail".
Along with over 100 Amateurs from 6 Counties, we manned "check points"
and "Aid Stations" along the course.

In addition, the Sarasota County Communications Trailer and Portable
Tower were set up at Seminole City Hall. During a portion of the Race,
this station was used to support a "logistical and supply" net. The
Trailer and Tower was transported to Seminole City Hall and set up on
Saturday, prior to the Marathon on Sunday.
