John,
I hope my question to Hyrum, KB1KRS, was on topic, as I was
asking him to offer support for his comment about whether
religion can be "used" (or discussed?) on the ham frequencies.
I realize some communist countries, some Muslim countries,
and some countries under dictatorships have real life
restrictions on the content of public or international
(ie, ham radio) conversations their citizens can participate
in. But Hyrum's blanket statement is just not universal.
You're right in that wrangling over "Merry Christmas" is
pointless. But, when someone goes around telling others what
supposedly mutually consenting parties can't talk about
on the air, those statements needs to be clarified, or
backed up, or refuted.
If Hyrum wants to avoid religious conversations, that's fine.
But I'll challenge him on his apparent assertion that other
mutually consenting parties shouldn't discuss their religious
beliefs on the air. His wording was not very precise, so I
wanted to give him the opportunity to clarify.
Hope you had a nice Ramadan/SamHain/Solstice/Hannukah/Christmas/Yule/Kwanza holiday season!
