If so, I'll be listening and will encourage my No-code Tech pal to 
listen in too.

He really, really wants to get involved in all aspects of Ham radio. 
The other year, he took an emergency communications course.  He's not 
afraid of trying things but he has some major life issues going on with 
aging members of his family, job, you know the story.

The approach I'll be taking with him is this.  Get your radio turned on 
and with a pad of paper, tune to 7040.

There will be a lot of signals, listen, tune around. Pick out the Q 
signals and other artifacts,  CQ is easy.  That's the first one to go for.

Then try for the DE, AR, K.  If you get a few of those, that's plenty. 
You're not practicing code, it's more like hunting or fishing.

After that, your next prey are callsigns.  Those are good because 
there're sent 2 or 3 times.

Anyway that's what I'll be telling him.
