Here's the good thing about having numbers to exchange. For new operators,
or those with little experience or who may be getting back into it after
years away, it's nice to have something to talk about. They are probably
PROUD to belong and want to share that. Getting your feet wet by calling or
answering a CQ with your call, name, state and possibly a group/number is
REALLY good practice. Even if you're not too good yet with the "small
talk".
Sometimes new or "returning" CW ops just don't know what else to say and if
they just want to exchange names and numbers and then run for cover, I
understand that! Think of how important that exchange might be to them! A
good ragchew is always fun - but remember that not everyone is ready for
that. As good stewards and wanting to make everyone feel welcome so that we
KEEP CW alive, fun and INVITING for newcomers, I think it's great to make a
quick Q with someone, if that's all they can do or all they want. There are
plenty of ragchewers out there for lengthy Qs if want them (and they are
GREAT!!), but don't forget that the small exchange you have with someone
might just be a HUGE step for them, no matter how long they've been
licensed!
