[Fists] Ever tried CWCom?

The Code Buddy Coordinator (me) is all in favor of using this program,
and I will seek more knowledge on how to use it and how to let other
people know how to use it. Here's why....

The Code Buddy program regularly receives requests for help learning the
code from non-hams (yes!) and from Technicians who can work VHF only. I
have never been able to match a Tech with an elmer on 2m or 6m. 2m isn't
a good option unless one has an all-mode transceiver (not that common
especially among those new to the hobby. 6m is almost in the same bucket.

The "comfortable" speed range of almost every student requesting help is
00-05 wpm, with many listing 00 wpm. Do these students belong on the
air? Not in my opinion. I always suggest a list of free downloadable
computer training programs for them to use to get up to 5 wpm. I tell
them about code tapes and CDs (ARRL products because I know of no
others), have sent them copies of code on CD or tape. I have sent them
lists of ARRL-affiliated clubs within 20 miles of their QTH, clubs that
offer help to newcomers. (There is no good way for me to find non-ARRL
affiliated clubs throughout the country.)

I have also received requests for help, and some offers to elmer, from
DX entities. The biggest problem with these folks is the time
difference. The VU's and JA's are sleeping when the western hemisphere
is awake. CWCom won't help that, but it could help when someone applies
from an area that elmers can't hear.

If any of you have constructive comments, please share.
