Dear Dennis,
I for one am (FISTS # 7019) am NOT for eliminating the CW requirement
for getting a ham license, I think we should do away with testing altogether
so that everyone could be an Extra Class with discrimination. That way we
could all have access to ALL of the frequencies and modes and take away any reason
for the FCC to element our use of the bands.
Rules and band segment usage is difficult for us older folk to
remember so we could just eliminate that also. If I want to operate slow scan TV in
the middle of a DX pile up, why should anyone care or perhaps I could get a 10
KW AM transmitter and operate a broadcast station for the benefit of amateur
radio (ala K1MAN) in the SSB portion of the bands.
We should encourage anyone and everyone to get a ticket by paying
their fee. Especially fertile fields are found in the arena of ex-CBers and their
10 codes, long haul truck drivers (they may not want to pay the fee) and
illegal immigrants in this country who want to save postage.
We must be careful not to discriminate against ANYONE because everyone
has a Constitutional right to have a license. Perhaps we can persuade the
radio manufacturers to include the license in the box with the purchase of the
radio so that people wouldn't be inconvenienced by having to go to a place
where VE's give the exams.
Heaven forbid that we have anyone in this hobby that has any EXPERTISE
or anyone who is required to do anything that they don't like or want to do.
Why should anyone be required to follow rules? I see duffers playing the in
the PGA all of the time and Tiger Woods is real happy about it.
You are an Extra? You must be a 5 WPM (welfare) extra if you think
ANY FISTS member would be in favor of eliminating the CW requirement. Why would
anyone in his right mind want to be a member of FISTS if they weren't in
favor of a
CW test?
Get real and lay off smoking the rope.
