During my recent DXpedition to a Central American Country for the CQWWSSB
Contest, my host came into the operating area and asked "Does anyone here copy
CW?" I volunteered that I did and he directed me to the telephone in his
residence.
An official of the local Ministry of Communications had received a message in
Morse code, but was unable to decipher it. The message had been recorded on
audio tape and was then played to me over the telephone. The message was sent
at between 15-20 WPM and consisted of only 5 characters. The characters were
DU2M2. I do not know what it means but the official was unable to copy it.
Thanks were conveyed to both myself and my host for our assistance.
I really felt a lot of personal satisfaction in being able to assist an
official of our host country.
I have always enjoyed CW and will continue to do so. You never know when
your skill in CW may be called upon.
