As was I. I've been DX'ing, involved in contesting, and just being a ham for
over 40 years, not nearly as long as you, I think, but long enuf to see the
currents of change.

I used to think the "one ringers" to work a new one were just on the edge of
cheating, but now we have packet clusters, DX nets with masters-of-ceremony
coaching the contacts (listen to WA4JTK on 14.247 some afternoon if you want to
puke up your lunch), daily DX bulletins via the internet, and all other manner
of "help" in making contacts.

What ever happened to a solitary ham just turning on his receiver and slowly
stroking that big knob in the middle while he/she put his/her head "inside the
band" and became part of the ether, and a student of the e-Layer. The things
you don't find! I'm missing only three on CW and seven on phone to have "worked
them all", and none came from a packet cluster, a net control, or an internet
schedule.

Again, from the French:

Un chasseur sachant chasser chasse sans son chien.
(A hunter who knows how to hunt hunts without his dog)
